Seniors & Renters: Claim Up to $1,000 in Housing Relief—Property/Rent Rebate Deadline Is Near

With housing costs and inflation continuing to pressure household budgets, Pennsylvania’s expanded Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program offers vital relief for eligible seniors, renters, and individuals with disabilities.

This state initiative now provides rebates of up to $1,000 to help offset the growing burden of property taxes and rent.

Expanded Eligibility & New Deadlines

Governor Josh Shapiro’s administration, in partnership with the Pennsylvania Department of Revenue, has extended the application deadline to December 31, 2025, ensuring more residents can take advantage of this financial assistance.

Who Can Apply?

The program is designed to assist:

  • Homeowners and renters aged 65 and older

  • Widows and widowers aged 50 and older

  • Individuals with disabilities aged 18 and older

Income Limits:

  • Homeowners: Up to $45,000 annual income (increased under the latest expansion)

  • Renters: Up to $15,000 annual income

Important: Only half of Social Security income counts towards the income threshold, increasing eligibility for many households.

Funding and Application Process

The rebates are funded through Pennsylvania’s state lottery and gaming revenues, specifically allocated to support older adults and residents with disabilities.

Applications can be submitted in three ways:

  1. Online through the myPATH portal

  2. By mail using the PA-1000 form

  3. In person at Department of Revenue offices or community centers

The priority deadline remains June 30, 2025, for those seeking early processing, but late applications will be accepted until December 31, 2025.

Program Impact & Why You Should Apply

In 2024 alone, the program distributed over $319 million in rebates to more than 522,000 Pennsylvanians, a significant increase from the previous year.

With housing affordability still a major concern, the Department of Aging highlights this program as a crucial tool to help older residents stay in their homes and maintain financial stability.

Officials are urging eligible residents to apply as soon as possible.

The Department of Revenue anticipates even more applications this year, with a projected 41,000 additional participants joining the program.

If you qualify, this rebate can be a valuable lifeline against the backdrop of rising costs, inflation, and property tax hikes.

Don’t leave money on the table—submit your application and claim your $1,000 rebate.
